irectly adjacent to Canyonlands National Park, but without the protections afforded by National Park status, Beef Basin and Fable Valley are both threatened and beautiful. Due to the area’s inaccessibility, and because access requires a high-clearance four wheel drive vehicle and extra fuel, Beef Basin is less frequented by visitors and is a delicate place of solitude, beauty and wonder.
This remote, mid-elevation area has many well-preserved Ancestral Puebloan surface cultural sites. The area is distinguished by little known and exceptional freestanding Pueblo masonry structures, towers and rock art. It was inhabited in ancient times by prehistoric farmers. The standing towers with adjoining community houses in Beef Basin are rare and unusual in the region. Additionally, undisclosed and undocumented cultural sites are considered significant and sacred by many Native Americans.
