The White Canyon area is home to one of the largest and most complex canyon systems on the Colorado Plateau. Esteemed Navajo Headman Kee Diniihi was born here in White Canyon in 1821, and there are significant Ancestral Puebloan rock art and dwelling sites, as well as places important to the Navajo and Ute here in the upper reaches of White, Deer, Gravel, Long and Cheesebox Canyons. As the meandering canyon system drains in to the Colorado River at Lake Powell to the west, it becomes more serpentine, narrow and secretive, making the place a draw for hardy adventurers. Prominent buttes here, one called the Cheesebox and another called Jacob’s Chair, stand as sentinels above the canyons, orienting visitors to their location in this country that is both vast and intimate.
